Vasil Peshkun is a leader among the young Belarusian artists that use their works to continue the best traditions of
Belarusan realism.
He sees an inexhaustible source of beauty and creative energy in the eternality of nature, therefore his works focus
foremost on landscapes and still-lifes. A landscape for Vasiliy Peshkun is a space where man lives; a concrete place on
a geographic map with it's own natural and architectural characteristics; it is a spiritually symbolic area that forms
characters, ways of thinking, and the aesthetic values of an individual. The artist uses his perception of this space,
his subjective view on the world, to attempt to reach a deeper connection between man and nature.
Mr. Peshkun's Weltanschauung and unique artistic style were formulated on the basis of the creative legacy of the
transcendent Belarusian landscape-painters of the 20th century, and, of course, the accomplishments of French
impressionists in the study of the interrelationship of color and light.
His paintings amaze and astound with their unbelievable strength of life, constructive energy, and the specificity
of his figurative language.
The body of his work varies by subject and mood: the lyrical-meditative nature of a winter village landscape; the
dynamics and expressions of city life; the humble grandeur of Christian temples set in the most beautiful of places; the
reverie of city alleys and parks; the exotica of southern countries; and above all, the streets of his native Minsk.
Although the palette of works is diverse and varied, the majority are dominated by rich and bright paints, contrasting
combinations, and an expressive manner of drawing.
Vasil creates all of his works exclusively in nature. This is the important principle of his work. A painting is
created practically in one sitting. It is the result of a momentary burst of impressions that requires instant embodiment.
His still-lifes reveal his admiration for the vast scope of nature's creations and his attentive study of their details.
Most often of all, his topics, including flowers, fruits, samovars, and cups of tea, recall man's presence. And, if, in
his landscapes, the artist is entirely in the power of nature, then the subjects of his still-lifes are a cause for
experimentation. They represent uninhibited improvisations with color, line, texture - sometimes turning into practically
abstract compositions.
All states of nature evoke identical admiration from the artist - any time of day, any weather, or time year. Anything
he sees around him is material for the creation of unique, life-affirming art. All things in nature are various
manifestations of it's majestic and limitless beauty, and the motif of every painting is a point in the endless expense
of an integrated and harmonious world.
